As you page through our gallery you will see many different types of cake
styles. Wedding cakes in particular range from the classical pillar, modern
stacked, combinations of both these styles and complete deviations from these
through variations of the whimsical “Mad Hatter”, art deco creations, even
Modern and recent trends include cupcake towers, doughnut or profiterol cakes
(French cream puff), and mini cakes.
Shapes vary too, from the classical round, to the
modern square, hexagon, heart, flower even differing combinations of each. On a
customized level we have received requests for cakes in the 3D of jeans, male
and female torso, shirts, cars, and various animals.
Fresh flowers remain the most popular and effective way of decorating a cake.
If you are hiring a florist for your event the majority tend to include cake
flowers in their quotes. If they don’t be sure to ask as we do not supply fresh
cake flowers. Make sure they obtain flowers that are pesticide free and food
So long as you are not choosing exotic hothouse flowers like certain types of
orchids, fresh flowers are more affordable than you may think. In our
experience flowers have never been used to cover a cake completely, they are
simply used to accentuate.
Of course if you choose a pillar style and wish to fill each gap with flowers
completely you may find yourself exceeding the florists budget so be sure to
advise your florist of your cake design. If your reception is going to be at a
residence and you are not hiring a florist we will be more than happy to do the
cake flower decoration free of charge. You simply need to ensure the cake
flowers are clearly marked as such and kept to one side in a jug of water.
Make sure there is someone at the house who has been designated to organize the
cake table (keeping in mind the overall size of the cake, in particular the
base), complete with drape cloth or in a style of your choosing. Upon one
occasion no one had been designated.
After much searching we discovered our cake flowers had been mixed in with the
table arrangements and there was no cake table, as guests were arriving we were
frantically pulling roses out of the arrangements and scrambling around for
something that resembled a cake table!
For weddings, if you choose to use fresh flowers as your cake topper in lieu of
the more traditional bride and groom, be sure to advise your florist of the
size of your top tier once we have completed our cake consultation with you.
We have more than once dismantled the florists’ topper; recreating a smaller
bouquet topper ourselves because their creations were more suited for a table’s
center piece…sometimes less is more! This same rule also applies to new as well
as hand me down toppers.
Choosing a 3 tier stacked cake design but trying to incorporate mom and dads
eight inch high gazebo from their original 4 tier pillar cake, (no matter how
pretty), just does not work. Furthermore, if your guest list leans towards
small and exclusive bear in mind the top tier of your cake needs to be large
enough to accommodate the base of your topper without looking too top heavy.
If you don’t wish to use a hand me down, there is a wide selection of cake
toppers available on the web – simply search for cake toppers on any Yahoo or
Google search engine or even ebay and you will be rewarded will multiple pages
Sugar Paste Flowers
An alternative to fresh flowers is to replace them with hand made lifelike
sugarpaste creations. Sugarpaste flowers are priced separately to your cake and
vary according to flower type but in general range from $4.50-$7.50 per flower,
excluding leaves, (orchids, roses and calla lilies being the most popular.)
Bouquets are priced separately and quoted based on flower selection.
It is a tradition, but by no means a necessity, to have a second cake, a
“groom’s cake”, to be cut and boxed as a gift to the guests to take home. This
cake was, in the English tradition a darker fruit cake than the main wedding
cake. To keep the tradition but change the flavor, chocolate cake has become
the popular substitute. The design is often left to the grooms who seem to opt
for a personal or more light hearted design, their favorite sport being an
A groom’s cake is after all still a cake and is therefore priced according to
the guidelines outlined above. The Tradition of the Top Tier Saving the top
tier in your freezer for your first anniversary is a tradition which originates
in England. You will find the majority of English wedding cakes to be made from
dense rich fruit cake made with chopped glace cherries and dried fruit. Brandy
is added to the cake mixture and is also lavishly brushed over the whole cake
after baking. The alcohol acts as a natural preservative and if tightly wrapped
and stored in a cool dry place, will last for 6 months or up to 3 years in a
To carry this tradition over to today’s cakes is difficult – the American
palate seems to prefer light fluffy butter or airy sponge cakes which
unfortunately do not have the freezer life of the traditional fruit cake.
Our cakes do not contain any preservatives however we have found that if
wrapped and boxed in Tupperware they may last up to 6 months in the freezer,
but definitely not a year. We would rather you come back to us the following
year and we will supply you with a 3inch mini cake free of charge
